International Womens Day 2018 – A Happy and Sad Day on Gozo, Malta

Azure Window Collapse Gozo

Every year on 8 March, the world pays a very special tribute to all women by dedicating an entire day – the International Womens Day 2018.

International Womens Day 2018

Respect, responsibility and support to every woman is surely not limited to just one day. It should and must be every day. But certainly the International Womens Day 2018 is here to remind us of the beauty of each and every woman, irrespective of age, health, history, ideology, race or religion. Respect and love have no boundaries.

Well, on the islands of Gozo and Malta, Women’s day is widely celebrated in schools, at work and in each and every community. Husbands take their wives out for lunch or dinner. Entire families enjoy a nature outing and picnic either by the sea or surrounded by the verdant hills and terraced fields of Gozo.

This day reminds us of another very important one – Mother’s Day which we celebrate soon in May.

So, today like many locals, we celebrated Women’s Day with our family with a difference.

From all the places on Gozo, we chose Dwejra bay for a very important reason. There, we also had a wonderful walk and great lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Azure Window Gozo

You may ask: Why did you celebrate Womens Day at Dwejra?

Well, since last year, on Gozo island, the International Womens Day 2018 reminds us of a very sad story here on Gozo. It was actually on Wednesday morning, 8 March 2017 when one of Gozo’s most iconic spots, the Azure Window at Dwejra bay collapsed. Strong winds and big waves which hit the island last year caused this collapse and huge loss for Gozo and all its locals and visitors.

International Womens Day 2018 and the Azure Window collapse story

I remember very well receiving a message from one of our guests coming from China who had booked to stay at our Gozo self catering with sea view accommodation asking:

Frank, is it true that the Azure window collapsed? So we can’t see it when we visit and stay at your accommodation?!

Yes, unfortunately it was true. Nature carved it and nature took it back!

Social media and media channels put the Azure Window sad story in their top of the headline news.

The atmosphere on Gozo was a very sad one. The Azure Window was part of us – losing it was and still feels like a beloved person who passed away.

Azure Window Collapse Gozo

Oh but certainly not everything is lost! Not sure… but maybe the divers are probably the luckiest ones now to explore the Azure Window collapse!

This is because now, already for a whole year, it is becoming like a new diving attraction, of course respecting all environmental local marine laws and restrictions.

A year passed since the Azure Window collapsed. But memories are still very strong.

Celebrating International Womens Day 2018 in Gozo today was maybe a little easier. But in Gozo, it will never ever be the same again.

Happy International Womens Day 2018!

Weddings in Gozo – Why Getting Married in Gozo, Malta

Weddings in Gozo

Hi! We’re planning to get married on Gozo and would like to ask about your availability. Any help in organising our wedding would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help….  This is a typical email message we receive from potential newlywed couples planning their weddings in Gozo.

Tying the knot is certainly the most memorable day for many couples around the world. In the last two decades, the number of couples who got married in a far away destination has increased rapidly. Mobile technology, low cost travel, accommodation options for all budgets and the amazing landmarks or natural beauty of certain destinations surely played a very important role.

The island of Gozo in the very middle of the Mediterranean Sea is no exception. In fact weddings in Gozo by foreign couples is becoming a more popular wedding destination.

Gozo is an all year round travel destination. But now more visiting couples of all ages are marrying here on Gozo after falling in love with our island during their first visit.

What would weddings in Gozo look like?

Have a look at one of our friends, Matthew’s wedding day in our town by the sea of Ghajnsielem on Gozo island (Courtesy: Francesca & Matthew, xik pictures, gozotv.com).

Why weddings in Gozo?

1. The Climate

Certainly the weather plays an important role. The Maltese Islands are perfectly located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, between Europe and Africa.  The weather in Malta and Gozo rarely gets very cold in winter and very warm in summer.  In winter, day temperature varies between 14 to 20 degrees Celsius and maybe goes down at night about 8 or 9 degrees Celsius a couple of times only.  In summer, temperatures range between 30 to 36 degrees Celsius.  But again, being in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, the gentle sea breeze does cool down the heat during the day and night.  Fantastic!

2. Great heritage for wedding locations

Though a very small island, Gozo is surprisingly very rich in history and prehistory heritage. The Gozo Citadel and the world famous Ggantija Temples built over 5600 years ago are found here. That’s not all. If you like art in all its forms, old and contemporary in various mediums and shapes, you’ll find it certainly here.  Festivals, historical re-enactments, exhibitions, concerts, musicals, operas, ballet performance and numerous sports events fill the Gozo’s cultural diary of events inside out. In a nutshell, there is always something going on here… Couples visiting Gozo for the first or more times are so impressed with the possibility to have a civil wedding in a such a unique prehistoric or historical site as a backdrop on their most important day of their lives.

3. Amazing churches and chapels for religious weddings in Gozo

Did you know that in Gozo and Malta there are 365 churches? That is a church for every day in the year! Well, it is no surprise that especially Catholic couples from across the world fall in love with one particular church or basilica in the town where they stayed or discovered a little hidden chapel around the terraced fields… and decide to have their wedding mass service there. In a nutshell, the choice and variety of churches and chapels is truly amazing.

4. The Views

Whether you are coastal walking around the valleys or the South high cliffs or else sea kayaking around beaches, caves and inlets, the views remain spectacular.  Two of my favourites are definitely the sunrise views on the Gozo channel and sunset on Xlendi and Dwejra bay.  Just magical! No wonder why couples decide to do their pre-wedding photography sessions here too.

5. Food

Daily baked crispy bread and pastries from log ovens just round the corner, fresh Mediterranean fruits, vegetables and wild herbs just picked in the morning from the nearby valley terraced fields, daily fresh local milk products, quality red meat and certified poultry and certainly the unique fresh catch of the day – absolutely recommended! Couples falling in love with Gozo often wonder what it would be like to have such a rich gastronomy heritage on their wedding day!

6. Wedding Service Providers

Weddings in Gozo are made easy to plan and organise with very little hassle. All key service providers are available and very easy to contact to help you plan your wedding day. Wedding planners help with any required wedding documentation whether it is a civil or a religious wedding, photographers, caterers, florists, bakers, videographers, beauticians and hairstylists.

7. Local Hospitality

Luckily enough, Maltese people still have a strong sense of community.  This is most evident during the annual feast celebrations across Spring and Summer time. The majority of families still embrace the values of commitment, dedication and solidarity.  In fact, if there is one common element in all the guests’ reviews at our Gozo boutique self-catering accommodation  certainly is how friendly the local people had been.  So, if you’re visiting Gozo and plan to marry here, do not hesitate to ask. You have the added advantage that all locals speak English, but they’ll even go the extra mile to help you prepare your Big day! If you’re not yet convinced, check out this lovely Scottish couple’s story of Norman and Susan on Gozo.

8. Honeymoon on Gozo

It’s incredible but true that some wedding stories on Gozo started from the idea of having only their honeymoon on Gozo island. It is therefore truly amazing that some couples during their pre-honeymoon visit, even decide to change their original plans and home country venues and decide to get both married and spend the honeymoon on Gozo!

Carnival Gozo 2018 – This Year’s Opening Events

Carnival Gozo 2018

Carnival Gozo 2018 was officially opened on Sunday 4 February. However it will reach its climax in its classical five day festival between Friday 9 February and Tuesday 13 February, exactly before the forty day long Lent time.

This year’s opening of the Gozo Carnival was certainly a spectacular one. Over 500 participants from various dance schools across Malta and Gozo participated in the opening session on the sunny Sunday afternoon.

But this is just the starting point. What’s coming up on Gozo in the next days is surely a must-see event. As a local, one cannot but notice the huge activity going on till late  in the small villages and towns – preparations, rehearsals and final touching of all Carnival floats and colourful costumes.

The pictures below certainly do not do justice to the amazing performance of all groups during the Gozo Carnival 2018 official opening at Nadur.

Valentine's Day on Gozo

Valentine Gozo – where is best to take my Valentine to eat out on Gozo?

Certainly it’s not an easy question to answer. This is simply because the excellent places where to eat out on Gozo are luckily quite numerous.

However, we have specially handpicked three great places to dine out on Valentine’s Day on Gozo island and listed them below in no particular order.

Except for

…if you prefer to take your Valentine to eat out on the South East / East coast of Gozo with its amazing panoramic sea views of the islands of Malta, Comino, Cominotto and the Blue Lagoon, Country Terrace Restaurant in Mgarr/Ghajnsielem, just five minutes walk from Mediterranea Seaviews Holidays on Gozo is certainly one of the places to go.

But if you prefer to surprise your loved one in the inspiring historical capital Victoria, that is central Gozo, then Maldonado Bistro would be a great option.

And of course, if you would like to leave both the harbour and Capital sides away… and enjoy a romantic dinner on the pretty West coast of Gozo, it would be surely interesting to consider il-Kunvent Restaurant in the village of Gharb.

Whatever you choose on Valentine Gozo, we hope you both enjoy the place, the food, the atmosphere, but above anything else yourselves… because all we need is love.

Time is to short to waste it. Enjoy it together!
